Family affair
APOLLONIA POILÂNE • baker and CEO • Poilâne
Neighborhood you live and work in in: Saint Germain des Prés
It’s Friday morning. What’s the scene at your workplace?
It’s the earlier hours of the day, as I turn into Rue du Cherche-Midi, the delicious smell of the bakery infusing the air. Could you think of a better way to draw an end to your week? I typically enter the store to say hello to each person on the team working that morning.
Poilâne was started by my grandfather, Pierre Poilâne, back in 1932. Over the years, we’ve gained recognition in our neighborhood and beyond. For now, we’re getting our orders ready to serve our clients eager to have a croissant on their way to school, a whole loaf to escape the city for the weekend, or the lovers of our ‘pâtisseries boulangères,’ like our apple tart. My office is just above the bakery, so the smells of the different productions from our wood-fired oven act like a clock throughout the day.
What’s on the agenda for today?
Today, my focus is two-fold: wrapping up the winter season while simultaneously fine-tuning our spring and summer to come. I’m guiding a visit of our bakehouse to friends of friends in town. I love to share how each baker hand-shapes each loaf and is responsible for their entire batch’s production, furthering the love and care we put into our craft.
Any restaurant plans today, tonight, this weekend?
I’ll have lunch or dinner at Sauvage on Rue du Cherche-Midi, for a French local and seasonal meal. Or Le Cherche Midi (also on Rue du Cherche-Midi) for a fresh pasta fix. For apéro, I could splurge at Hotel Lutetia with live music or a beer from the Café de Flore’s tap with a Welsh rarebit if the weather is cold enough.
How about a little leisure or culture?
I’m a cyclist on weekends and tend to go out on Sunday mornings with friends. When we go all out, we may end up at Le Barn for a mid-morning coffee before returning to Paris. I also take my dog for a walk in Champs de Mars or Les Tuileries so we both get our ‘sorties’ for the weekend. And I love to visit an exhibit, galleries, or see a show. I recently went to the Musée Maillol, which presented the extraordinary work of Nadiah Léger. And I loved the retrospective of the centennial Galerie Larock-Granoff.
I’ve also taken my nephew to a great experiential place for children at the back of the Chantelivre bookstore. It’s an indoor playground featuring books from their collection. Honestly, it’s just as much fun for an adult as it is for a child.
Any weekend getaways?
While Alexandre Gauthier’s fine dining restaurant (La Grenouillère, close to Montreuil-sur-Mer in Pas-de-Calais) was flooded last year, his sister restaurants and rooms offer just as delicious an escape from Paris.
What was your last great vacation?
I went to Cancale in Bretagne, West of France, where I would recommend the area ‘Pays Malouin’ at large — the Maisons de Bricourt, more specifically. If you have the time, and the season and weather are right, I would go to the nature-focused Îles Chausey for the day.
What’s a recent big-ticket purchase you love?
My neighbor Lola makes custom-made bomber jackets, which have been a dream since I slipped into one of her Cafe de Flore editions. –28/03/25

It’s Friday morning. What’s the scene at your workplace?
It’s a gentle, golden-lit Friday at our atelier in Le Marais. We’re wrapping up the final touches on a capsule collection in collaboration with a Japanese brand — a very special project close to our hearts. Our studio is a blend of old-world charm and clean modernity, scattered with moodboards, fabric swatches, and stacks of old books. We balance working from home with studio time, but Fridays are always for in-person creative sessions with the team. During a mid-afternoon chat, we suddenly realized we’d run out of brass plates for our engravings! So off we went, to the last true artisanal metal supplier in Paris: Tartaix Métaux Outillage on rue du Pont aux Choux — that street name? Pure poetry.
What’s on the agenda for today?
We’re finalizing color variations for a signature design — a client in Tokyo requested three exclusive shades. There’s also a shoot next week at Le Bon Marché for our corner on the second floor. Teaser: We’re redesigning our display — think sculptural minimalism meets literary chic.
Any restaurant plans today, tonight, this weekend?
Tonight, it’s dinner with friends at Le Bizetro in the 16th — classic French food, a warm, noisy, joyful atmosphere. People talk loud, sometimes yell with laughter. It’s the kind of place where you always feel at home.Tomorrow, we might do a relaxed lunch on the terrace at Cherche Minuit, a modern Breton brasserie in the 6th we love recommending to out-of-towners — chic but unfussy.
How about a little leisure or culture?
Saturday afternoon, we’re heading to Mobilier National for the current exhibition: Le Dernier Sacre, curated by none other than our ultimate design idol, Jacques Garcia. Expect drama, history, and French opulence. Sunday morning, it’s back to childhood memories: sailing little wooden boats in the pond at Jardin du Luxembourg. We race them across the water like we’re five again. It’s deeply nostalgic — Igor used to come here as a child, and every time, it feels like time travel.
Any weekend getaways?
Not this weekend, but next one we’re escaping to Le Perche with friends for a breath of fresh air. We often stay at our house in Mortagne-au-Perche, or sometimes at the utterly charming D’une Île — a cozy countryside hotel run by the same team behind Septime in Paris. Also, a must: we always pick up wine from La Vie en Rouge — a true hidden gem.
What was your last great vacation?
Hangzhou and Shanghai! Igor used to live in China, and wanted to show Lauren the country through his eyes. We stayed at The PuLi Hotel and Spa which was beautifully serene — an oasis in the middle of the city. And for an unforgettable dinner? Din Tai Fung, of course.
What’s a recent big-ticket purchase you love?
We’ve been collecting rare books and prints from the 17th and 18th centuries at auctions — these pieces deeply inspire our design work and creative direction. Check out Librairie Clavreuil.
What store or service do you always recommend?
Astier de Villatte — for their ceramics, candles, and unapologetically poetic world. A classic for hosting afternoon tea with friends in style. –20/06/25

It’s Friday afternoon. How are you rolling into the weekend?
France has this tradition of the author-director that we stick to, so sadly (or fortunately) depending on the mood, no Friday looks like any other. Also, all writers know they never really stop working, even on their days off. When I’m in the process of writing a film, I spend my days in my small office in the 5th, surrounded by a garden that makes it feel so special in Paris. I read, write, talk, smoke cigarettes, sleep in the afternoon, then jump on my bicycle to pick up my four-year-old from school around 6. I listen to a podcast while cycling, cross the Seine, and join the gang.
Fridays are also when my stepdaughter comes back for our week. It feels like a party: She’s 10, and we all have a movie night together. And to be specific: I roll into the end of the day with a glass of red wine. I’m a living French cliché.
What’s on the agenda for today?
I’m releasing my latest film in a few days and shooting a TV series at the same time. So I’m texting all day and night with my co-director, editing what has already been shot, and prepping the release of Vie Privée in France on the other days. I’m currently on my way to Aix-en-Provence for a premiere of the film tonight. But don’t get me wrong, this is clearly a hectic moment. Usually my life looks more like unemployment (see answer number 1).
Any restaurant plans today, tonight, this weekend?
Yesterday was a free day. We celebrated my father-in-law’s birthday at Hôtel Amour in the 9th, then I took my kid to the Jardin du Luxembourg for a ride on the carousel and some fun at the Luco park. Walking those alleys, especially in autumn, makes me feel blessed to live in Paris.
I know I’ll spend the weekend at my fav restaurants and spots on my street, rue Martel, Kamo for amazing tapas, Le Martel for couscous, Madame Gen for a drink, Chez Marie for lunch. You have it all on one block. Perfect for the laziest person in town: me.
How about a little leisure or culture?
The best art dealer in town: the hidden gem Galerie Bazar, where Joséphine Guerrin has just opened this affordable, cutting-edge place full of great artwork from rising artists. I also love the secret spot Out of the Blue, where you’ll find drinks, food, and a hidden little cinema downstairs with an amazing program curated by Chloé Bourges.
Any weekend getaways?
La Bastide de Moustiers is the best getaway: good food, good wine, lost in an amazing landscape, just two hours from Paris and close to les Gorges du Verdon! Romantic and quiet. It’s only open seasonally, so you’ll have to wait until spring, but trust me, it’s worth it. And the restaurant by Alain Ducasse has both a Michelin star and a Michelin Green Star.
What was your last great vacation?
The Italian Alps, Hotel Bellevue, in Cogne. Snow, landscapes, raclette, cute outfits and uniforms for everyone in the hotel, an amazing spa and a kids’ paradise.
What store or service do you always recommend?
Best gifts at Astier de Villatte! Everything’s precious, beautiful, fun, and you can spend 10 euros or a million, depending on your mood and your bank account.
Where are you donating your time or money?
Les Guerrières de la Paix, women fighting for justice and peace in the Middle East, we all need this. And Viens Voir Mon Taf, a place where kids without any social network can discover mentors and jobs they wouldn’t know existed, and concretely find internships. I believe in these local, smart initiatives that bring more social justice. –28/11/25

It’s Friday morning. How are you rolling into the weekend?
My home is my workspace, so I wake up surrounded by my creations: ceramic lamps, a custom-made sofa, paintings. It’s a colorful and joyful space, with a palette centered around primary colors. I start my day with a matcha latte and avocado toast, put on some music or a podcast, and dive into emails.
What’s on the agenda for today?
I often work outside at Cinéma du Panthéon or Le Floor. I try to exercise daily — pilates, yoga, or a walk through Jardin des Plantes, right across from my home. A lot of my time is spent on calls with my workshop in Italy, overseeing the production of my ceramic lamps, developing new prototypes, and coordinating deliveries. Each lamp is custom-made for the client, so I handle every order individually. I also make it a point to visit exhibitions regularly to stay inspired.
Any restaurant plans today, tonight, this weekend?
A work-from-home snack at Cinéma du Panthéon, yesterday’s business lunch at Hôtel Hana and its Japanese-influenced restaurant. This weekend, brunch at Pluto inside Lafayette Anticipations, followed by evening drinks at Cravan in the 6th arrondissement.
How about a little leisure or culture?
The Fondation Louis Vuitton always has incredible exhibitions. Around Paris, I’d also recommend the Marta Pan and André Wogenscky Foundation or the Theo van Doesburg House for those interested in De Stijl aesthetics. Both are well worth the visit.
What was your last great vacation?
Mexico this summer. I fell in love with Mexico City, where I visited Luis Barragán’s houses and the extraordinary Parque & Casa Orgánica by Javier Senosiain. Before that, I was in Copenhagen, which is magical when the days grow longer and everyone swims in the Søbad. It’s a fantastic city for design and art, with highlights like the Louisiana Museum, Arne Jacobsen’s gas station, and the Design Museum Denmark.
What’s a recent big-ticket purchase you love?
A Gaetano Pesce lamp, Salvatore.
What store or service do you always recommend?
I love Isabel Marant, otherwise Le Bon Marché and my hairstylist Adrien Coelho at Palais Royal. –24/10/25

It’s Thursday morning. What’s the scene at your workplace?
I’m just back to Paris after spending a few weeks working from Italy so I’m settling back into my work routine here. In Paris this means I wake up early, light a few candles and some incense, make a coffee, and open my laptop at my dining room table/desk.
What’s on the agenda for today?
I do my best writing early, and since I’m on a few deadlines, I’m spending the first part of the morning focused on that. Then I have a bit of admin, plus some work on my next newsletter Shortlisted. This afternoon, I have a coffee date with a friend, and I’ll run a few errands on the way back up to the apartment to pick up a few things for dinner, and a bottle for a recipe I’m working on. I’m currently developing a drink for my next New York Times piece, and I always try to schedule any cocktail testing closer to the end of my work day… just in time for apéro.
Any restaurant plans today, tonight, this weekend?
Tonight we’re eating at home — which always feels like such a pleasure after traveling. We brought back a few treats from Italy and I’ll be supplementing them by popping into my neighborhood cheese shop, Quatrehomme, and the épicerie for fresh produce, plus a fresh baguette from Mamiche. We have friends in town this weekend so I made a few reservations including Bistrot des Tournelles and Oobatz. I’m also looking forward to taking them to a favorite wine bar, Folderol, and for a dressed up drink at the Crillon.
Any weekend getaways?
A month or so ago I spent a long weekend in Lisbon which was equal parts fun and research for Lisbon, Shortlisted. I have a few future weekends planned for 2025 including London, Copenhagen, and the Basque Country, as well as some bigger trips on the horizon. My most recent book, Le Sud, focuses on Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur, and so the past few years have involved a lot of train trips to the south of France for research, shooting, and writing — and I’m still always looking for an excuse to take the train down for a quick weekend.
What was your last great vacation?
Right before I went on book tour this past spring, my partner Laila and I took a trip to Korea and Japan. It was my last chance for a proper holiday before the whirlwind of launching a book and it was each of our first times visiting both countries which served to make it feel like a truly special trip. We flew direct from Paris to Seoul and then home from Tokyo and I’m already plotting a way to go back.
What’s a recent big-ticket purchase you love?
I picked up a pair of Venetian slippers at Piedàterre when we were in Venice recently that I’ve wanted for years. You can, of course, wear them outside but as we’re a shoes-off house, I love the idea of using them as elevated house shoes.
What store or service do you always recommend?
I love a facial and whenever friends start planning a trip to town I recommend booking one with Elaine Huntszinger. And I always send friends to Beillevaire for butter to take home. If you ask, they’ll vacuum seal it for you, and it’s truly the best butter I’ve ever had. –25/05/25
