Classical comfort
The Skinny: After winning a Michelin star for inventive (but very polished) contemporary French cooking at his eponymous restaurant in Les Halles, young chef Omar Dhiab cooks from the heart at this minimalist space in the 10th. The resulting comfort food dishes at Elbi reflect his identity growing up in France as the son of an Egyptian father and a Tunisian mother.
The Vibe: The sprawling space with Formica booths, tables, and a big table d’hôtes immediately pulled an eclectic crowd of Parisian creatives, along with Egyptian and other North African expats proud to see their childhood comfort foods rendered by a chef trained in classical French haute cuisine.
The Food & Drink: Start off with a Karkadé cocktail, named for Karkadé, the delicious spiced hibiscus juice and citrus drink served at Egyptian weddings. After that, plan on two or three small-plate dishes per person. The menu is divided up into sections by cooking method — room temperature, steamed, fried, grilled, and roasted — so set up your table with the chopped tomato, onion, and cucumber salad and some homemade harissa. Then, tuck into dishes like succulent octopus-stuffed ravioli in a creamy sauce seasoned with couscous jus; an Egyptian-style Scotch egg (soft-boiled, wrapped in falafel, and deep fried); tempura grape leaves with a spicy chickpea condiment; hawawchi, a flaky grilled flatbread stuffed with ground beef; and maybe the lacquered pigeon with fried almonds and an apricot-and-pepper condiment. There’s an ambitious and pricey list of natural and organic wines.
The Verdict: A poignantly delicious ode to the multicultural childhood of a talented young chef, Elbi shows off just how cosmopolitan modern French cooking has become. –Alexander Lobrano

It’s Friday morning. How are you rolling into the weekend?
Joyfully! By Friday, the week is in full swing — projects are moving forward, meetings are flowing, and by the end of the day, there’s a palpable buzz as the weekend approaches… which also means it’s almost apéritif time!
What’s on the agenda for today?
No two Fridays are ever the same, and that’s exactly how we like it. The day always starts with a review of our numbers — a key moment to assess the business (it’s our eighth generation producing Greek olive oil) and get a pulse on the week. From there, it’s full speed ahead: meetings with our teams, conversations with chefs and partners, and checking in with ongoing projects. The afternoon might bring a visit to a restaurant, a logistics check-in, or a strategic meeting to fine-tune our next initiatives.
Any restaurant plans today, tonight, this weekend?
We like to kick off the evening with drinks at Débonnaire on Avenue Trudaine or Le Mansart on Thursday nights. For dinner, Ida by Denny Imbroisi in the 15th is the go-to spot for the best carbonara in Paris. For a romantic dinner, we head to La Passerelle by Mickaël Méziane in Issy-les-Moulineaux — special mention for its wine cellar! With friends, we book a table at Babille, Bazurto, or Yaya for a lively dinner.
We also love Mojju by Thibault Sombardier in the 7th or Pouliche by Amandine Chaignot. And for a must-have Sunday brunch, we make a beeline for BOULOM in the 18th, where Julien Duboué serves up a fantastic Southwestern-style buffet. For an afternoon indulgence, a quick stop at Yann Couvreur is a must — his pastries never fail to surprise.
How about a little leisure or culture?
The Paris Aquarium is a lifesaver for keeping Théodore — Grégory’s son — entertained for a full morning. A stroll through Montmartre and Rue des Martyrs is always a pleasure. We’ve also enjoyed the Banksy Museum on Rue Montmartre (The World of Banksy), and for a wild night out, La Fête near Place de Clichy, where Dorion keeps the dance floor alive.
Any weekend getaways?
We escape whenever we can! Loire Valley Lodges, nestled in the forest near Tours, is a dream for disconnecting in a magical setting. Annecy is another favorite — whether summer or winter, the lake offers the perfect mix of adventure and relaxation, from paddleboarding and hiking to skiing. And of course, Brittany — especially the Gulf of Morbihan, where the raw, unspoiled landscapes are always a source of inspiration.
What was your last great vacation?
Greece — back to Kalamata, where Kalios was born. A true homecoming, spent with family among olive groves and the sea. It’s always a meaningful trip for us — revisiting our family’s land, reconnecting with our producers, and most importantly, gathering around long, generous Greek meals.
What’s a recent big-ticket purchase you love?
An Angell electric bike… that never arrived! (If anyone’s listening).
What store or service do you always recommend?
Citadium — even if you’re not buying anything, the vibe is always fun, and it’s a great place to hang out.

The old ways
Near the Champ de Mars, on a stretch of rue de Grenelle lined with too many boulangeries and diplomatic plaques, Lastre Sans Apostrophe plays a different tune: part charcuterie atelier, part edible gallery. Opened in 2016 by Yohan Lastre (a world champion of pâté en croûte) and his wife Marion Sonier (a skilled cabinet maker who designed the boutique herself), the space honors French tradition while making room for tongue-in-cheek humor.
Pâté en croûte is the star: from classic versions with duck, foie gras, and pistachio, to spicy pork with chorizo and piquillos, and even a colorful vegetarian take. Then there’s the Oreiller de la Belle Marion, a king-size, pillow-shaped pâté filled with 15 different meats (pheasant, venison, rabbit, wild duck…) and a generous dose of truffle, inspired by the classic Belle Aurore.
And it’s not just pâté. There are sculpted rillettes shaped like piglets, cow-head butter blocks, and a rotating cast of to-go dishes like leeks in vinaigrette and richly flavored pot-au-feu. Although more discreet, their mustard deserves a special mention: a non-broken, whole-grain version made with herbs from their Normandy garden that adds a satisfying crunch to anything from cold roast beef to vinaigrette-dressed greens.
Orders are old-school, by phone, or just show up and be prepared to wait. The experience is part of Lastre’s allure: an artisanal sanctuary where every product tells a story of passion and patience. –Victoire Loup
